The Glens Falls Neighborhood Group

The Glens Falls Neighborhood Group meets at Patchwork Passion Quilt Shop at 206 Glen St., Glens Falls, NY.
We have an informal meet and greet with refreshments from 9:30-10:00 am and the meeting from 10:00-12:00 noon. After the meeting, join us for lunch at a local eatery.

This month in addition to our show and tell and unloved fabric swap, we are having a presentation by Patricia  Hagen on the making of a tape measure (self-closing) bag. This is a hands-on workshop so please bring your sewing machines, thread etc…

The agendas for October and November are as follows:

• October 13- Sherry Nadzan Recinella, a professional theatrical costume designer, will discuss her craft and present a trunk show of her work.

• November 10-Connie Large will present a puppet construction workshop.

For 3 days only, Friday to Sunday, the exhibit hall, infused with inspiration, is offering stunning displays, runway shows, demos, make ‘n takes, how-tos, meet & greets and more. Here you will find to-die-for fabrics, fibres, papers, beads, patterns, kits and must have notions, tools and equipment. In our Canadian Arctic Pavilion, discover the luxury of Qiviuk, the inner down of exceptional quality from the Muskox, an animal that survived the last ice age. Relax and sample the many fibres of Coats & Clark Canada, Westminster Fibers and Kertzer at their yarn tasting. And, watch fashion happen right before your eyes as student design teams race the clock to complete a winning design in their show floor studios for our Project Creativ Catwalk challenge.

There’s always something new to learn. Whether beginner or expert you can choose from more than 200 hands-on classes that will challenge you to explore and work with new mediums while indulging in the process of personal design and style. Get up-close-and-personal direction from industry experts and some of the world’s most recognized designers and artists. Enjoy techniques rich classes focusing on cards or scrapbook layouts from both Cathie Allan and Sarah Hodgkinson. If felting is your area of interest, there’s none better from whom to get the scoop, than Gio and Norm Gaudet, whose incredible line of felted garments launched LG Fashion week in Toronto this year. Learn to decorate or stage your home like a pro with TV host author, Susan Wells or create reversible garments with Kathryn Brenne, who has over 70 articles published in magazines like Vogue Patterns, Threads and Sew Stylish. This is just a sampling of the hands-on workshops that start on Wednesday, October 20th before the show floor opens.

Some of you have been asking about the CREATE YOUR STYLE with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Jewellery & Accessory Design class, so we’ve got more details for you. We’ve heard you’ll be making among other things a ring and embellishing a denim pouch. And, you get to keep the embellisher, the BeJeweler Stone Styler! We’re really thrilled to be featuring Stephanie Kleinman, creator of the long running HGTV series Simply Quilts, now sharing her new Fabric Studio™ software. Did you know you can create your own fabric designs using affordable software and then either print these on an InkJet fabric sheet with your InkJet printer right at home or send away for the yardage you want? The InkJet Printable Sheets come in several different fabrics including cotton, canvas, linen and even silks. There are several different companies that manufacture these products or you might want to try a product called Bubble Jet 2000 which allows you to treat your own fabrics and make them ink permanent. Over the last couple of years several companies have popped up on the internet doing digital printing. If you want yardage you can send that seamless image you have created within the software and they will print you customized fabric and mail it back to you. Most of the online services use a soluble pigment ink, which require heat setting after the inks are applied to the fabrics. Each company differs a little with their own unique fabric selections and most of them usually start at $16.95 a yard.

Stay out of the heat! Have a sewing “staycation”.

Don’t sit in traffic trying to get to a tourist trap! Enjoy the comfort of your own home and a little bit of piece and quiet. Sewing can be a quiet time for reflection, a distraction while you ponder things.
