My name is Martha Sherman-Czuhanich, and I have been sewing since my first lesson at the age of seven. Time has not diminished my love for all forms of sewing.

As a teen, I sewed my own clothes. As a mother, I sewed for my home and two daughters. As a retired grandmother, I am now able to sew for my grandchildren and others.

me, myself, & I and Kattails grew out of a dream to start my own business. I have always loved to sew, and, with the arrival of several grandchildren, I had a desire to see them dressed with old-fashioned grace and style – qualities I could not find in typical mass-produced clothing I found in malls and megastores.

I am fortunate to have been able to travel to different parts of our country to learn more about sewing. I have increased my knowledge of sewing, serging, quilting, embroidering, beading, and other forms of the trade in the last few years, and still I search for more. Traveling has allowed me to find new and different fabrics to supplement our local selections. I have taken what I have learned, the materials I have found and have created a girls’ line of clothing called Kattails. Pride is in every stitch of the creation for that special occasion.

I work in styles that I believe are clean and classic, and I use the finest fabrics and materials available, keeping in mind wearability and ease of care. Each piece is created with the utmost care and attention to detail, inside and out. Much of the work is completed by hand. Fabric edges are bound, and seams are reinforced. Coordinated linings are used wherever appropriate.

I was asked to teach sewing, so I taught in the Washington County (NY) LIFTS program in 2003 and 2004. When deciding on teaching programs for my own business, I did extensive research of the teaching materials available and selected two programs that I believe in:

  • The Winky Cherry method of hand sewing for children,
  • Martha Pullen Heirloom Sewing, including French sewing and lace shaping.

I also teach Basic sewing for new sewers or adults who have forgotten how to use their machines.

I am a licensed Martha Pullen/Husqvarna Viking instructor.

I look forward to instructing you!

See you in class!
